Question by pythagoras: What happens to breast implants in buried corpses?
When a person with silicon breast implants dies, and they are buried, do their fake boobs just stay in the ground. And also, If a person is cremated, do they have to remove them do to air pollution concerns.

If a person does have fake boobs, shouldn’t they be removed at the funeral home and be disposed of as industrial waste?
I was just curious btw, and no i don’t have better things to think about, i thought it was a fairly legitimate concern. I have a very active mind and I always think about these sorts of things. I apologize if I offended anyone. Thanks for all the serious answers though.

How to Choose Breast Implants

Silicone Breast Implants. Saline Breast Implants. Round Breast Implants. Shaped Anatomic Breast Implants. Smooth Implants. Textured Implants. Some many choices, but which one is best for you? Breast augmentation requires proper planning on your part as well as on the surgeon’s part. Yet most people probably spend more time chosing a microwave than they do on chosing their surgeon and their implant options.

Choosing your Plastic Surgeon. In the US you need to look for a surgeon who is Board Certified in Plastic Surgery. Board Certification means that the surgeon has gone through the proper training and at the end of this training the surgeon has passed an oral and written test and has proven that he is a competent and safe surgeon. Some ‘Cosmetic Surgeons’ are not surgeons at all, while other are surgeons who advertise themselves as “Board Certified” but they don’t say what specialty they are certified in. Board-Certified in Internal Medicine is not a qualification for Plastic Surgery. Board-Certified in Cosmetic Laser Surgery is not a qualification for Plastic Surgery (in fact, Cosmetic Laser Surgery and other “cosmetic” and “Aesthetic” boards are often nothing more than a marketting scheme… there is no specialty in Cosmetic Laser Surgery. It’s a make-believe specialty).

In addition to Board Certification in Plastic Surgery, ask your surgeon which hospitals he/she work at. Hospitals require surgeons to provide proof of their competency to perform procedures… thus if a surgeon is not allowed to do cosmetic procedures at a hospital, it’s probably because his peers did not feel he/she had the proper training and skills. Finally, you want to know how many breast augmentations he/she performs per year. Is it one of his/her most common procedures? You cannot expect anyone to be a master of all of Plastic Surgery. Each surgeon has his or her area of interest and expertise.

In summary, when chosing your Plastic Surgeon, look for:

Board Certification in Plastic Surgery Hospital privileges Experience (procedures/year) Area of interest

Once you have chosen your Plastic Surgeon, you need to discuss your surgical options and you need to chose your implant.

The surgeon will examine you and tell you what options you have. When you do not have options (without a logical explanation) it may be because you’re dealing with someone who does not have the proper training to either perform various types of breast augmentation or lacks the understaning to think of the other options. Surgical options include scar placement and breast implant placement.

Finally, the breast implants.

In the US until recently Silicone Breast Implants were restricted to only breast cancer patients (why? I never understood that). In Canada Silicone Breast Implants have been available for some time now, and in the rest of the world they have never been taken off the market. Silicone Implants do not cause illnesses. The hoopla around silicone implants is too big to describe in this article, but the bottom line that after years of intense scrutiny, FDA found no links to any illnesses and has once again allowed silicone breast implants to be used for cosmetic purposes. Silicone has a more rubbery consistency than saline breast implants (which are pretty much nothing more than a water balloon). They maintain their shape better and thus ripple (wrinkle) less. This is important in thinner patients where the implant outline can be seen and wrinkling/rippling creates a noticeable irregularity on the breast. Silicone implants are much better at limiting rippling than saline implants. Additionally, the new highly cohesive silicone (“gummy bear implants”) has a “form stable” consistency. What this means is that if you cut the implant in half, it will just sit there, it will not spill out unlike the older more liquid silicone.

Saline implants are nothing more than sophisticated water balloon. They add volume to the breast and should ideally be limited to patients with existing breast tissue that will cover the implant, thus the water-balloon feel and rippling will be obscured. Additionally, placing saline implants under the muscle hides the implant so that the rippling and the abnormal feel is once again obscured.

Breast Implant shape is also important to consider. Round breast implants create more of the ’stripper’ look, with fullness on top. Young patients tend to like the look of the round implants. Shaped breast implants have more fullness on the bottom, which is ‘anatomic’ … meaning that the implant better resembles the anatomy of a normal breast. These implants have a more natural look. They are also ideal in patients who have some droopiness/sagging to their breast but do not want a breast lift.

Breast Implant placement refers to where the implant sits. In can be a submuscular breast implant location or a subglandular breast implant location. Submuscular implant means that the implant is placed under the pectoralis major muscle. The benefit of putting the implant under the muscle is that it has been shown to decrease the risk of capsular contracture. Placing the implant under the muscle also adds an additional layer of padding on top of the implant to obscure the implant edges and rippling. The downside of going under the muscle is that it is much more painful, takes much longer to recover and to see the final result. Finally, contraction of the muscle will make the implant move and thus breast ‘jiggle’ when you move your arms.

Finally, breast implant surface. Implants are smooth or textured. Smooth breast implants are able to move around. Textured Breast Implants have a rough surface that sticks to the surrounding breast tissue like velcro. It is thought to lower the risk of capsular contracture.

I hope its also 18, having a 15 year old or any child underage getting this type of surgery just to better there appearcnce doesn’t look right and they are at very high risk of getting complications. Sorry if this seems judgemental too you but seriously any one underage getting implants is just plain obscene and ridiculous. The only time someone should actually get this surgery done is if they had breast cancer this is an option for them to get a part of there body that was taken away from them medically, other than that stick with natural.

I wanted to know of your experiences or anyone else’s experiences that you know of who have breast implants during their pregnancy & if it affected the implants, size, or shape at all after child birth. Breast feeding or bottle feeding.

I am currently 6 months pregnant and I have breast implants. They have gotten so large ( I know it’s normal regardless if you have breast implants or not) and I cant wait for them to go back to their size before pregnancy.

Ok I got implants after my son was born. Then I got pregnant less than a year after having them done. A waiste of $$ I know. lol

Anyway so my breasts got HUGE during the pregnancy and even bigger right after (when my milk came in), but I was able to successfully breastfeed my baby. It was no harder than breastfeeding my 1st child.

As far as how they LOOKED… well like I said I was less than a year into having them done when I got pregnant SO before I got pregnant they were very perky and “perfect” in my eyes (no sagging, etc. at all).

During the pregnancy they just got BIG.

Immediately following the pregnancy they got even BIGGER (because I had milk- as you will even if you don’t breastfeed)

AFTER I quit breastfeeding (now) the size went back down and they were a bit more “saggy”… but not bad AT ALL! They still look a lot better than any of my friends who have had babies and do not have implants. They are full and haveplenty of “tissue” or (implant -lol) in them. My husband actually likes them better now because before he said they looked fake and felt fake.Now he says they look real and feel real. ALSO – they are still more perky than any women I know with a NATURAL D or DD cup size.

Don’t stress. The implants will keep your breasts from losing all shape and form after the milk is gone! I still absolutely LOVE mine and am SO glad they don’t look like they did after my 1st was born (no tissue and VERY saggy).

Earlier my family was talking about how breast implants pop/shrink and how this girl my mom knows happened to her. I am wondering if this is true. Is it true? Does it happen to all kind of breast implants? Or does it happen to only cheap breast implants?

this was actually on 1,000 ways to die. it did happen to a lady that went to mexico and got faulty implants. when done properly no it doesn’t happen. that’s why you shouldn’t shop around for discount plastic surgeons.

Breast implants deflate when the saline solution leaks either through an unsealed or damaged valve or through a break in the implant shell. Implant deflation can occur immediately or slowly over a period of days and is noticed by loss of size or shape of your breast. Some breast implants deflate (or rupture) in the first few months after being implanted and some deflate after several years.

Causes of deflation include damage by surgical instruments during surgery, overfilling or underfilling of the breast implant with saline solution, capsular contracture, closed capsulotomy, stresses such as trauma or intense physical manipulation, excessive compression during mammographic imaging, umbilical incision placement, and unknown/unexplained reasons. You should also be aware that the breast implant may wear out over time and deflate/rupture. Deflated breast implants require additional surgery to remove and to possibly replace the breast implant.

Capsular Contracture

The scar tissue or capsule that normally forms around the breast implant may tighten and squeeze the breast implant and is called capsular contracture. Capsular contracture may be more common following infection, hematoma, and seroma. It is also more common with subglandular placement (behind the mammary gland and on top of the chest). Symptoms range from mild firmness and mild discomfort to severe pain, distorted shape, palpability of the breast implant, and/or movement of the breast implant. Additional surgery is needed in cases where pain and/or firmness is severe.

This surgery ranges from removal of the breast implant capsule tissue to removal and possibly replacement of the breast implant itself. Capsular contracture may happen again after these additional surgeries.

Pain

Pain of varying intensity and duration may occur and persist following breast implant surgery. In addition, improper size, placement, surgical technique, or capsular contracture may result in pain associated with nerve entrapment or interference with muscle motion. You should tell your surgeon about severe pain.

Additional Surgeries

You should know that there is a high chance that you will need to have additional surgery at some point to replace or remove the breast implant. Also, problems such as deflation, capsular contracture, infection, shifting, and calcium deposits can require removal of the breast implants. Many women decide to have the breast implants replaced, but some women do not. If you choose not to, you may have cosmetically unacceptable dimpling and/or puckering of the breast following removal of the breast implant.

Dissatisfaction with Cosmetic Results

Dissatisfying results such as wrinkling, asymmetry, implant displacement (shifting), incorrect size, unanticipated shape, implant palpability, scar deformity, hypertrophic (irregular, raised scar) scarring, and/or sloshing may occur. Careful surgical planning and technique can minimize but not always prevent such results.

Infection

Infection can occur with any surgery. Most infections resulting from surgery appear within a few days to weeks after the operation. However, infection is possible at any time after surgery. Infections with a breast implant present are harder to treat than infections in normal body tissues.

If an infection does not respond to antibiotics, the breast implant may have to be removed, and another breast implant may be placed after the infection is resolved. In rare instances, Toxic Shock Syndrome has been noted in women after breast implant surgery, and it is a life-threatening condition. Symptoms include sudden fever, vomiting, diarrhea, fainting, dizziness, and/or sunburn-like rash. A surgeon should be seen immediately for diagnosis and treatment for this condition.

Hematoma/Seroma

Hematoma is a collection of blood inside a body cavity, and a seroma is a collection of the watery portion of the blood (in this case, around the breast implant or around the incision). Postoperative hematoma and seroma may contribute to infection and/or capsular contracture. Swelling, pain, and bruising may result.

If a hematoma occurs, it will usually be soon after surgery, however this can also occur at any time after injury to the breast. While the body absorbs small hematomas and seromas, large ones will require the placement of surgical drains for proper healing. A small scar can result from surgical draining. Implant deflation/rupture can occur from surgical draining if damage to the breast implant occurs during the draining procedure.

Changes in Nipple and Breast Sensation

Feeling in the nipple and breast can increase or decrease after breast implant surgery. The range of changes varies from intense sensitivity to no feeling in the nipple or breast following surgery. Changes in feeling can be temporary or permanent and may affect your sexual response or your ability to nurse a baby.

Breast Feeding

At this time it is not known if a small amount of silicone may diffuse (pass through) from the saline-filled breast implant silicone shell and may find its way into breast milk. If this occurs, it is not known what effect it may have on the nursing infant. Although there are no current methods for detecting silicone levels in breast milk, a study measuring silicon (one component in silicone) levels did not indicate higher levels in breast milk from women with silicone-filled gel breast implants when compared to women without breast implants.

With respect to the ability to successfully breast feed after breast implantation, one study reported up to 64% of women with breast implants who were unable to breast feed compared to 7% without breast implants. The periareolar incision site may significantly reduce the ability to successfully breast feed.

Calcium Deposits in the Tissue Around the Breast Implant

Deposits of calcium can be seen on mammograms and can be mistaken for possible cancer, resulting in additional surgery for biopsy and/or removal of the implant to distinguish the calcium deposits from cancer.

Delayed Wound Healing

In some cases, the incision site takes longer to heal than normally.

Extrusion

Unstable or compromised tissue covering and/or interruption of wound healing may result in extrusion, which is when the breast implant comes through the skin.

Necrosis

Necrosis is the formation of dead tissue around the breast implant. This may prevent wound healing and require surgical correction and/or breast implant removal. Permanent scar deformity may occur following necrosis. Factors associated with increased necrosis include infection, use of steroids in the surgical pocket, smoking, chemotherapy/radiation, and excessive heat or cold therapy.

Breast Tissue Atrophy/Chest Wall Deformity

The pressure of the breast implant may cause the breast tissue to thin and shrink. This can occur while breast implants are still in place or following breast implant removal without replacement. In addition to these complications, there have been concerns with certain systemic diseases, of which you should be aware.

Connective Tissue Disease

Concern over the association of breast implants to the development of autoimmune or connective tissue diseases, such as lupus, scleroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis, was raised because of cases reported in the literature with small numbers of women with implants. A review of several large epidemiological studies of women with and without implants indicates that these diseases are no more common in women with implants than those in women without implants. However, a lot of women with breast implants believe that their implants caused a connective tissue disease.

Cancer

Published studies indicate that breast cancer is no more common in women with breast implants than those without breast implants.

Second Generation Effects

There have been concerns raised regarding potential damaging effects on children born of mothers with breast implants. A review of the published literature on this issue suggests that the information is insufficient to draw definitive conclusions.
