How can I avoid taking lip ring out on day of surgery?
Question by Stephanie: How can I avoid taking lip ring out on day of surgery?
I’m having surgery done on my ear and it requires that I take out all piercings. I have my lip pierced and have only had it for two months. I was wondering if I could put in a plastic piece in place of the metal. I already tried to take my lip ring out to test it and after one hour it started to close. I don’t see why I have to take it out because I’m having surgery on my ear not my mouth or anything.

You can’t leave it in. You can talk to the doctor and ask if you can replace it with plastic. Usually if you are going under general anesthesia, you have to remove all metal because in the unlikely event that you need to be defib’d, it will electrocute that area as metal conducts electricity.

Check out hottopic.com for plastic “spacers” to help maintain the piercing – lots of people use them for professional jobs, too.
I had to put one in for my nose ring for surgery.
Don’t worry, you can keep it!

If you don’t take it out, they will do it for you. When I donated my kidney I forgot to take out my nipple rings. Well when I woke up they were gone. Kinda creepy now that I think of it. So a nurse or somebody obviously took them out when I was unconscious. I got back the jewelry when I was discharged.
