Put an End to Teasing With Otoplasty
Otoplasty (ear surgery or ear pinning or ear shaping) to fix protruding ears is becoming one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries for the face, especially for children. This cosmetic surgery, though gaining popularity with youngsters, can be performed at any age as long as the ears have reached their full size.
Even if your ears are only mildly protruding or distorted in some way, this anomaly can lead to extreme self-consciousness and poor adaptation and functioning in school. We all know that children can be quite cruel to each other, and children with protruding ears are often called names like “Dumbo” and would do just about anything to end the constant teasing they endure at school. Otoplasty is a safe and highly effective cosmetic surgery solution to the problem of ears that stick out.
Are you a candidate?
Though most popular in children, adults may also benefit from this procedure, and, often, adults choose otoplasty in combo with other facial cosmetic surgeries. Ears can be pinned back, reshaped, reduced in size and made more symmetrical. This surgery does wonders for people’s self-esteem and confidence level.
Otoplasty is not recommended for everyone, and your cosmetic surgeon will discuss options, risks, and costs with you at the time of your initial consultation. General good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites for any surgery. Otoplasty does not improve hearing or affect hearing in any way. The goal of a successful otoplasty is to adjust the ears to make them proportionate to the size and shape of one’s face and head.
Having your child’s best interests at heart is also very important. A positive attitude is crucial when committing to ear surgery, especially when the patient is a child or teenager. A consultation with a plastic surgeon will help parents decide what is best for their child aesthetically, psychologically, and physically.
The surgery
An incision is made behind the ear in the fold where the ear is joined to the head. The cosmetic surgeon will remove cartilage and skin required to achieve the desired effect. In some cases, the cartilage will be trimmed and shaped into a more desirable form. The cartilage will then be pinned back with permanent sutures to secure the cartilage.
After the surgery, soft dressings will be applied for a few days. You cannot sleep or put any pressure on your ears, and you may experience some discomfort. Headbands are sometimes recommended for a couple of weeks to hold the ears in position.
Otoplasty risks are minimal, and the scar is barely noticeable since it is located behind the ear. As with any cosmetic surgery, if you experience any unusual symptoms after surgery, you should call your surgeon’s office immediately.
Many cosmetic surgeons offer attractive cosmetic surgery financing options to help you better fit this procedure into your budget.
